Welcome!
We are happy that you are here visiting our website and learning
more about ACE. We are excited about the work that is going on
right now and have recently started several long term projects
that we believe will really make a difference.
Changing Lives. Transforming Communities.
So what does that mean, exactly? Glad you asked! We believe
that the only way to make lasting improvements in Jamaica is by
working to help both individuals and the community in which
they live. With skill building, job training, and mentoring programs,
we are able to touch lives in a meaningful way. As individuals
become stronger and more productive, we encourage them to give
back to the community, in order to help the next group of people.
By expecting recipients to participate in these programs, we encourage
them to become more invested in themselves and in their community.
We have found over
the years that self-esteem and a strong sense of independence
cannot be increased through simple handouts. We therefore, approach
community building with the assumption that something will be
required from each recipient: whether it is their time, a
commitment,
or even a small monetary investment. I should also state here that
this does not apply to the medical teams that visit several times
each year. We do not require any payment for medical or dental
services, as these are desperately needed in Jamaica.
I have worked with the Jamaican people for over twenty years,
and during that time, I have seen a lot of changes. But one thing
that never changes is the great need for volunteers, for service
work, for implementation of a vision for the people of Jamaica
to have a better future. At ACE, we are working towards that vision
and towards that future - one person and one project at a time.
We hope you will decide to join our team of volunteers.
Sincerely,
Marla Day Fitzwater
