Planting seeds and harvesting
rewards
Volunteers are often called a "thousand points of light" but
that number is very low. In fact, with 65 million volunteers, American
is the most philanthropic country in the world.
If you are part of this group, or want to be, you can visit us in
Jamaica to see where you can find new opportunities, or get started
helping. Take some vacation time for a discovery visit and
enjoy the island ambiance. Then you'll be ready to invest in helping make a difference in
the world.
Increasing the return
Beyond the fulfillment of knowing
that your skills and time are making a difference, many volunteers
overlook the added perk of tax benefits. If you're giving your energies
to a charitable cause like ACE, there are a host of possible tax
deductions to consider. Un-reimbursed expenses related to your
volunteer work can be written off like the cost of gas to get
back and forth to the airport and airport parking. If you're
donating supplies, deduct those costs from your tax bill. If your
volunteer work involves travel, as it will when traveling to
Jamaica, you can deduct transportation expenses, meals and lodging.
Remember to retain all relevant receipts, and when possible,
have the charity provide a written statement of the work you're
undertaking on its behalf. Volunteering can enrich your life in many
ways; and
the tax benefits are an added bonus. |
